PERMANENT
VISA OPTIONSS
PARENT & AGED PARENT VISA
The aged parent and parent visa allows Australian Permanent Residents and Citizens to bring their foreign national parents to Australia on a permanent visa. Onshore applicants with no further stay conditions imposed on their visa and or shore applicants may apply for this visa but face processing times of up to 30 years.
Application Cost
Applicants pay a total application fee of $5,900 for the main applicant and $4,000 for their spouse or de facto partner.
Requirements
The aged parent/parent visa requires the visa applicant to be supported by the sponsoring child, to meet health and character requirements and to pass the âBalance of Family Testâ. An Assurance of Support Bond (AoS) needs to be lodged before a visa can be granted.
Entitlements
Visa holders are granted permanent residency and associated benefits including Medicare, government benefits and full-time working rights.
Processing Time
Since the demand for this visa far outweighs the number of available places, new applications are capped and queued. The approximate processing time for parent visas is currently expected to be around 30 years.
Who Should Apply?
This visa is suitable for families who are happy to wait for up to 30 years before a permanent parent visa is granted
PERMANENT
VISA OPTIONS
CONTRIBUTORY PARENT VISA
The contributory parent visa enables parents to secure permanent residency visa quickly. The increased cost and reduced processing time are the two key differences in contrast with the parent/aged parent visa. Parents may chose to apply for a temporary contributory parent visa at a cost of $32,825 entitling parents to a 2 year stay and then pay the remaining $19,420 when a permanent contributory parent visa is lodged.
Application Cost
The cost of this visa is around $47,400 for each applicant.
Requirements
The contributory parent visa requires the visa applicant to be supported by the sponsoring child, to meet health and character requirements and to pass the âBalance of Family Testâ. An Assurance of Support Bond (AoS) needs to be lodged before a visa can be granted.
Entitlements
Visa holders are granted permanent residency and associated benefits including Medicare, government benefits and full-time working rights.
Processing Time
The contributory parent visa is expected to be processed within 2 to 3 years.
Who Should Apply?
This visa is suitable for parents who would like to obtain permanent residency within a short period and are willing to pay higher application fees. This visa is also suitable for parents with dependent children as dependents may be added to the contributory parent visa application.
WHAT IS THE âBALANCE OF FAMILY TESTâ?

At least half of your children live in Australia permanently.
or

More of your children live permanently in Australia than in any other country.
NEW 10 YEAR TEMPORARY SPONSORED PARENT VISA
The temporary sponsored parent visa bridges the gap between the expensive contributory parent visa and the temporary visitor visa. It is also an alternative for parents who fail to pass the âBalance of Family Testâ and enables parents to reunite with their family in Australia.
Application Cost
Each visa applicant will need to spend $5,000 for a 3-year visa and $10,000 for a 5-year visa. The visa is renewable up to a combined maximum period of 10 years at a total cost of $20,000 per parent.
Requirements
Requirements for both applicants and the sponsors must be met before a visa can be granted. Sponsorship Assessment is a separate process and children need to be approved as sponsors before parents can submit their application.
REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICANTS (PARENTS)
– Health Exams & Character Clearance
– Adequate Private Health Insurance Coverage
– Financial Independence or Children Guarantee Support
– Lodge AoS Bond if Required
– Demonstrate Need for a 5 Year Visa vs a 3 Year Visa
REQUIREMENTS FOR SPONSORS (CHILDREN)
– Demonstrate Ability to Support Financially Dependent Parents
– Lodge Assurance of Support Bond if Required
– Demonstrate Need for a 5 Year vs a 3 Year Visa
– Demonstrate Financial and Residencial Commitment to Australia
Length of Stay & Priority
While the length of stay varies from 3 to 5 years, the visa is renewable for a maximum combined period of stay of 10 years. The duration granted is determined by factors including health condition, age, and parentsâ previous
Furthermore, the familyâs circumstances and needs such as childcare commitments to young children are of vital importance to the Department of Immigrationâs decision regarding the applicantâs length of stay. This includes
the sponsoring childâs ability to financially support the applicantâs well-being in Australia and the needs of the parents, children and grandchildren that might exist. As only 15,000 visas will be granted annually, a higher priority for visas will be assigned to citizens and permanent residents who can demonstrate longer periods of living in and contributing to Australia.
Entitlements
Visa holders are entitled to live in Australia and travel freely to and from Australia for a period of 3 or 5 years â depending on the length of stay granted.
Processing Time
The new temporary sponsored parent visa will become available from November 2017. A total of 15,000 visas will be granted annually.
Initial applications tendered in early November are likely to be processed in less than 90 days, while processing times for subsequent applications are expected to be capped and queued. Processing times for visas lodged after the initial open date are expected to match processing times of other visas which currently take 24 to 39 months to process.
Who Should Apply?
The new temporary parent visa gives visa holders the chance to freely travel to and from Australia without applying for a permanent parent visa. Compared to the temporary visitor visa, the permit holder of this new visa is not required to spend 6 months overseas after each 18-month period of stay in Australia.
Additionally, the âBalance Of Family Testâ is not required, which is one of the biggest barriers stopping families from applying for a permanent parent or contributory parent visa. Furthermore, the health requirement is likely to be less strict as applicants will need to provide their own private health insurance.
The temporary parent visa is a good option for parents who either do not meet the criteria of the contributory parent visa or who are not ready to commit to living in Australia on a permanent basis.
